Removal of Personal Accounts

The following pertains to our Personal/free users who assisted in the very early growth of Viddler.

Howdy Viddlers,

Let me begin by stating that Viddler is alive and well (we are not closing). Here's a paragraph I wrote back in 2011 when we disabled Personal signups:

Many of you are the reason Viddler has risen to where it is today. You are the ones that dedicated hours everyday creating videos, viewing and commenting on the videos of others, and participating in the many community adventures. There’s been countless smiles, tears, frolics, artworks, deep thoughts, kids, birthdays, unboxings, and marvelous accents.

Since 2008, we've placed our focus toward providing reliable, unique, and professional online video services for businesses and enterprises. We work with cruise lines, television networks, realtors, fitness studios, and many more amazing industries. If you were a member of our personal community, then you have certainly realized that our change in focus means you became less and less active on Viddler. You've found other free video communities to be part of. YouTube, Flickr, Vimeo, Facebook, and even Instagram, Vine or Snapchat (I know, the last three send chills down my spine from a video production perspective) are great alternatives to what Viddler provided back in 2007–2009.

As I mentioned in 2011, Viddler's 'user generated' community era ended. We've been keeping your accounts and videos alive since then, but we've never claimed to be a storage nor backup service. Especially since many Personal accounts outside that core original community are either commercial content violating our Terms of Use, or video spam.

The newsletter we sent out yesterday detailed steps on how to download your videos. You're welcome to do that. If you need assistance, then please contact our fantastic Support Team (of which I'm a member). I do hope you would have stored your videos locally though. Granted, it has been a long time since 2007, and even a great backup strategy may have resulted in missing files. I'm also happy to answer any questions on consumer backup solutions. Here at Viddler, many of us love Backblaze. I've also heard great things about CrashPlan.

UPDATE - 19 February, 2014: Our friend and former employee, Kyle Slattery, has created a Ruby script (view it here on Github) where you can download all your Viddler videos at once. This requires some programming experience, so it might not be for the faint of heart. Unfortunately, we cannot provide support for this third party tool.
